ABC NIGHTLINE - "TROOPS CONCERNED"
when informed by ABC of major protests in U.S.

If you happened to catch last night's edition of Nightline, you may have been as troubled as I was.  Freelance journalist Mike Cerre filed this report for a special Nightline series following the progress of Fox 2/5 Company. This report aired on Nightline Feb. 24, 2003.

The story made the case that the Marines in Kuwait were starved for news from home. Reporter Cerre loaned his short-wave radio to a group of Marines. They searched (on camera) for a station only to find an English Language Radio Baghdad. The men said they felt isolated and uninformed about news from home. Even their commander said there was little news being made available to the troops.

Out of nowhere, the men began commenting on the anti-war protests in the U.S. and how troubling those images were. This from our troops who have no outside contact in the desert? Where did they learn and see those images of "growing" protest movements at home. ABC?

The letter below is my reaction to interviews with U.S. Marines on the ground in Kuwait.  I hope it inspires similar communication from our visitors.

Subject: Fact Check

As I watched the Marines of Fox 2/5 company on Nightline tonight, I was troubled by some of their comments about "the growing protest movement" in the U.S..  We see it actually declining in smaller cities and in the case of the San Francisco protests, inflated claims of 150,000 to 250,000 protesters were disproved by the San Francisco Chronicle to be 65,000 at best. This coming weekend and for several weekend to follow, many tens of thousands of Americans will take to the streets around this country to participate in Rally For America events.

Perhaps Nightline won't have time to visit our website, but I would hope you feel an obligation to pass on some images to the men and women serving in our Armed Forces.  All over the great country, from one man in the snow on a street corner in Moorhead, Me, to several thousand in the Washington State, the press is starting to report stories like this:

"Saying it's about time U.S. military troops realized that many Americans support them in a possible war with Iraq, hundreds of Puget Sound-area residents waved American flags and "Support Our Troops" signs yesterday at rallies in Bellevue and outside McChord Air Force Base." (The Seattle Times)

With all of your resources and a "man on the ground", is there not a way Nightline can tell Fox2/5 Company the vast majority of our fellow citizens are proud of them, respect them and pray for their safe return home. Also tell them, while we have confidence in their ability to get the job done, we pray they will not have to march into harm's way to protect the world from tyranny. Only Saddam can make that call. Americans who support our troops are not Pro-War, rather, Pro-Peace... without surrendering to the evils of a despot.

60 Proud San Francisco Bay Area residents face off against 65,000 to say America Supports our Troops and to Liberate Iraq. I was honored to bring six of our neighbors from the Sacramento Area to join these wonderful people.
