She served her country in Afghanistan where she
contracted a terminal illness. While undergoing treatment at a
VA facility stateside, she learned her ex-husband had moved for
sole custody in the courts. When a court hearing was scheduled
this soldier found no help available from the VA or her branch
of service to attend the hearing and fight for her parental
rights. Two allied organizations stepped in to provide
clothing for court and make the day long journey to and from the
hearing. Sadly, the case was continued until later this summer.
We'll be there again if the need to assist presents itself.
This soldier is not alone! Military.com
brings the issue into clear focus and we're seeing prompt action
in Congress this week. PDN's CEO, CFO, Secretary and Vice
Presidents meet with staff from Congress Member Doris Matsui on
Wednesday, May 16th to rally support for our three priority
issues.
"This
additional protection is needed to provide them peace
of mind that the courts will not take away their
children because they answered the country's call to
service,"
